Multicolour Tulip Bracelet

Red, blue, green and violet, set in a run along a waved gold-tone bar chain, which is a lot of colour for a bracelet to carry without looking like a child's beads. It works because the stones are small and the gaps between them are wide.

The chain is doing the quiet work. Bar links waved rather than straight give the bracelet a soft ripple along its length, so it lies against the curve of the wrist instead of sitting on it like a rigid line.

It closes with a box clasp, the flat push-in kind rather than a lobster, and it sits neater against the skin. Box clasps are also easier to fasten one-handed once you have done it a few times.

Anti-tarnish plating earns its place around the settings. On a stone-set bracelet the metal between and beneath the stones is always the first area to grey, because it is the hardest part to reach with a cloth. This base resists that, so the bracelet keeps a consistent colour rather than going patchy around the brightest bits.

The stones are cubic zirconia in four colours. At this price that is the only honest way to have four colours at once, and it takes a red outfit or a blue one without ever having to match exactly.

Four colours on one wrist ought to be too much. Somehow it is not.
