Twelve charms arrive in the box, one for each month, so this gold-plated locket necklace can hold a single birthday or a whole household depending on how you fill it. The frame is an open heart with a glass face, and the charms sit loose inside it and shift as you move.

A note on what the charms actually are. They are coloured crystal cut to stand in for birthstones, not mined stones, and at this price nothing else would be true. What they do give you is the right colour for the right month, clear enough to read against the gold-tone backing.

The chain is a satellite style, so small beads punctuate the links and catch light along the length rather than only at the pendant. It fastens with a lobster clasp. The heart is light for its size, which keeps it sitting where you put it instead of sliding to one side through the day.

Mothers and grandmothers tend to like this one, and so does anyone who keeps track of family birthdays. Load one charm per child and add your own, and there is room left for later. Keep it away from perfume and take it off before a bath, since the plating and the glass both do better dry.

Reload it when the family grows. That is the part people forget a locket can do.
